High-barrier paper packaging: from development to recycling
Develop, evaluate and recycle high-barrier paper packaging
How can strong barrier properties be combined with good recyclability in paper packaging? In this interactive workshop, you will gain practical insight into the development, evaluation and recycling of high-barrier paper packaging. Through several demonstration stations, you will discover laboratory techniques used within the BeFORE project to assess the performance and recyclability of coated paper packaging.
For whom?
This workshop is intended for companies and professionals working on paper-based packaging, barrier coatings and circular packaging solutions.
- Developers and producers of paper, paper coatings and barrier coatings
- Packaging designers
- Packaging producers
- Packaging users, buyers and decision-makers
- Companies in the food, cosmetics and pet food industries
- Recycling and sorting companies
Key takeaways
You will gain practical insights into the link between packaging design, functionality and recyclability. You will also discover how innovative barrier coatings can support circular packaging solutions.
- Understand the CEPI recyclability method for coated paper packaging
- See live demonstrations of repulping, screening and handsheet formation
- Identify factors that influence the recyclability of high-barrier paper
- Discover how the Cobb test measures water barrier properties
- Learn how contact angle measurements indicate surface and barrier behaviour
- Explore microscopic analysis of recycled fibres and residues
Programme
After lunch together, we’ll begin with a brief introduction and a theoretical explanation of the CEPI method for assessing the recyclability of paper. We’ll then take a closer look at the design of recyclable packaging. In the afternoon, there will be an interactive workshop in small groups, featuring demonstrations on CEPI paper recycling, the Cobb test, microscopic analysis and contact angle measurement. We will round off the day with a networking drinks reception.
About this event
This workshop is organised within the framework of the BeFORE project — Barrier FOr REcycling, which explores how innovative barrier materials can improve the recyclability of flexible packaging without compromising performance. The project focuses on the impact of processing on barrier properties, material performance and recyclability. More information is available on the BeFORE project page.
