Accelerating the adoption of XR to transform Walloon industry
The WAL4XR project is part of the broader digital transformation and Industry 4.0 movement. Immersive technologies, grouped under the acronym XR (extended reality, virtual, augmented and mixed reality), open up new opportunities to optimise industrial processes, enhance training, improve maintenance and facilitate human-machine collaboration. With WAL4XR, Wallonia aims to establish itself as a leading player in this fast-growing field.
Context
Industrial companies face multiple challenges: increasing efficiency, ensuring safety, cutting costs and developing their operatives’ skills. XR solutions can help address these needs, but there are a number of barriers to their adoption: technologies that are still immature, high costs, lack of in-house expertise, limited immersive content, latency problems and the applications’ level of realism, which is still low. WAL4XR aims to overcome these obstacles and create favourable conditions for the wider and more effective adoption of XR in industry.
Objectives & Results
The project’s main objective is to develop, validate and transfer XR solutions that are tailored to the needs of industrial companies. The expected outcomes include:
- The development of new XR technological building blocks specifically designed for industrial processes.
- The creation of tools for immersive design, interaction and evaluation.
- The seamless integration of XR environments and data into production systems.
- The validation of these solutions through representative use cases run in collaboration with industrial partners.
- The establishment of a network of high-level researchers specialising in XR that will boost innovation capacity in Wallonia.
Approach
The project is structured around several complementary work streams, combining scientific research, technological development and industrial validation:
- Acquisition and processing of immersive data: collection, analysis and optimisation of XR data streams.
- Development of XR models and algorithms: creation of software building blocks to improve realism, interaction and performance.
- Ergonomic studies and user evaluation: analysis of acceptability and impact on operatives in order to optimise the user experience.
- Integration in real industrial environments: field testing and validation, aligned as closely as possible with companies’ needs..
This approach will ensure that the solutions developed do not linger at the experimental stage, but are adapted, tested and transferred directly into industrial practice.
Target Group
The project is primarily aimed at Walloon industrial companies, particularly in the manufacturing, maintenance, automotive, aerospace and construction sectors, which are looking to explore or adopt XR solutions. The results may also be useful in other fields such as healthcare, logistics or education.
